Recently I read a terrific book - "Rodinsky's Room" by Rachel Lichtenstein.

It's a wonderful insight into the Spitalfields area, the remains of the Jewish community who once lived there, and the imapct of other waves of immigration (Huguenots to Bangladesh, now Eastern Europe too) on the area. It's very movingly written as the author also journeys to Eastern Europe to find the remains of communities there.

I'd definitely recommend it, particularly to anyone watching the way East London is changing these days, to see how it was not so long ago.

In two minds whether to blog this photo or not.

One of the things I wanted to achieve through this blog is an insight into the many faceted sides and the many various communities that make up London. Well I don't think we've got very far with that, most of the photos are either clubbing, or people in the street - basically people openly interacting with others. This photo is a "snatched" shot, but well composed and featuring Londoners, after all.

I'd like to continue the project into next year and work harder at trying to find different places and groups of people to photograph. It's become harder because I now live abroad but as ever I'm open to suggestions and would like to meet people who are keen to expand this project, possibly people with contacts within different communities, or those who work with volunteer or charitable groups, or other projects which may be of interest to the wider London photographic community.

People don't realize quite how much photoshopping goes on in magazine images - that flawless skin, perfect hair and pristine white teeth is more often Photoshop than nature.

This is the description from the photographer abotu this photo - I sometimes feel like giving a lecture to girls my age, in which I show them what even I, an amateur, can do on photoshop. I don't mean any of that godawful hdr, I mean faux hyper-realism. The magazine 'realism'. We've all been told that they use photoshop in magazines, but I don't think most young female readers have any idea how much. This is my demonstration of how a normal girl, with imperfect skin, oily shine, bags under her eyes and smudgy make up, can turn herself into one of those velvet-skinned glossies in a matter of minutes. There are, of course, many many perfect-pored amazons out there, but it's nice to know the extent to which images lie, and that we can all be digital supermodels with a little software.

I had a very interesting week, learning all about Virtual Worlds - such as Second Life and World of Warcraft - which I had no idea about before. I was the photographer at the event and the rest of the photos can be seen at the flickr account.

Interesting people, into gaming and virtual worlds, and interesting speakers. Many big corporates such as Diageo, IBM, BP and Heineken talking about what virtual worlds andthe 3D internet mean to them.

this series is a great example of the difference between digital and film.

there's a lot of nonsense said about digital being "less warm" and "less personal" but these portraits from Charlotte are great and full of life.

These are shot on a Nikon D200 with a 50mm lens too.

The idea was to have everyone framed in the same way - they stuck up a piece of fabric on the brick wall so the focus was on the people not the surroundings.

They also marked an X on the floor with masking tape so that people knew where to stand.

The interesting thing then is, not only the different faces but lso a comparison of the photographic media. In this case, a Leica, 50mm lens and Fuji Reala film.
